Home Energy Investigation

If you add together all of the areas where wind moves into most homes from the outside it is like leaving a window open 6”or more. Air leaks waste as much as 30-40% of a home's energy intake. Your home's energy efficiency will improve vastly by properly sealing cracks, crevices, gaps that allow air to pass directly into a home's conditioned space through the exterior of the structure.

Air leaks, fireplaces, skylights, windows, doors, and low levels of insulation increase a home's energy consumption for heating and cooling.

You wouldn't store water in a leaky container. Similarly, don't try to cure hot and cold rooms, drafty floors and high energy bills caused by air leaks and air infiltration with larger heating or cooling equipment, solar panels or wind mills. You'll incur large equipment costs, the leaks will continue to waste energy and you'll still feel uncomfortable.

Fix the “container” you live in first, your home. Newspaper, television, and radio advertisements, sales clerks and internet companies all say the same thing—seal up air leaks and add more insulation. Great, but how do you find them? If by chance you are able to find them—do you know how to fix them properly?

A home energy investigation performed by an Energy Efficient Homes Team professional is your “road map' for improving the energy efficiency of your home. Homeowners receive comprehensive written reports identifying specific problem areas in need of repair. The Energy Efficient Homes Team also includes heat loss/gain calculations for proper heating and cooling equipment size.

We strongly urge that you recalculate your home's heat gain/ heat loss after completing our recommended energy saving repairs and before upgrading your heating and cooling equipment if needed. Often times sales people shortcut the process and simply replace an existing unit with “same size” new equipment.

Once your home is energy efficient, you may decide that solar panels are right for you. An energy efficient home with solar panels might produce more energy than you need and you can sell some to others. Wouldn't that be nice!

Home Energy Investigation on an Existing Home

A trained and experienced professional in energy efficient home technology visits your home one time and performs a visual home inspection/investigation. The trained professional interviews the homeowner first before conducting the inspection. The interview provides valuable information about the problems and difficulties experienced by the homeowner.

We base the cost of a home energy investigation on the square footage of the home, (including the basement) a travel distance of 60 minutes or less roundtrip, and one HVAC system (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning). Pricing is subject to change for greater travel time and additional HVAC systems.  The home inspection process takes approximately 2 hours to complete. Payment is due at the time of inspection.

Cost

Up to 2,000 square feet $300
Up to 3,000 square feet $400
Up to 4,000 square feet $500
Over 4,000 square feet TBD

A home energy investigation does not use equipment.
It relies on the knowledge and experience of the trained professional.

Other tests such as a blower door test or infrared inspection are available at an additional cost for extreme problems /difficulties.

HERS Rating Certification for mortgage purposes available at an additional cost.

Instead of working with people who still have their training wheels on and are just learning the techniques and energy efficient home technology (don't be the guinea pig for someone practicing) come to a company where the people know what they are doing.
